The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has granted an exemption to Iberdrola Australia SAGT Pty Ltd (Iberdrola) from notice of closure requirements in the National Electricity Rules in relation to the Temporary Generation South facility (SATGS).
On 24 December 2021 Iberdrola submitted an application to provide an early closure date of 1 May 2022 for SATGS.
After assessing the performance of SATGS and consulting with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) the AER has approved Iberdrola’s application. Once closed, Iberdrola proposes moving SATGS’ units to a new location where they will be recommissioned before the peak summer period. As this move will allow the units to operate on gas fuel, this may allow Iberdrola to participate more actively in the South Australian market, contributing to regional competition.
Generators are required to provide a minimum 42 months’ notice of their intention to close, unless granted exemption by the AER. The AER’s Generator notice of closure exemption guideline sets out our approach to handling exemption requests.
