On 21 December 2022, Essential Energy submitted an application to the AER under clause 6.6.1 (a1)(5) of the National Electricity Rules for a positive pass through of costs related to the New South Wales North Coast flooding event that occurred in late February and March 2022. Essential Energy's application proposes to recover $3.8 million from electricity users through an increase in distribution prices in the remaining year of its current regulatory control period, that is, from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024.

Energy consumers and other interested parties were invited to make submissions on Essential Energy’s 2022 north coast flood cost pass through application by 10 February 2023.
