Queensland electricity consumers should soon enjoy lower bills after the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) approved lower network tariffs for the upcoming year.

Energex consumers should see their residential electricity bills decrease by around $40 for 2018-19, a reduction of 2.4 per cent, if the retailer applies the reduced charges in full. The combination of the AER’s decision and the Queensland Government’s Uniform Tariff Policy means that Ergon consumers should receive a similar reduction.

AER chair Paula Conboy called for the reduction to be passed on to consumers in full.

“At a time when energy affordability is a key concern for Queensland businesses and households, this fall in network tariffs is good news. We urge retailers to pass through the reduction in full to consumers.

“Consumers should not be paying more than they need for reliable and safe electricity. Efficient network spending that prioritises customer value will deliver Queenslanders reliable electricity supply,” said Ms. Conboy.

Where retail offers are available, consumers should take action to ensure they are getting the best possible deal.

“People should always shop around for the best deal possible for their situation. The AER’s Energy Made Easy site is a free and independent price comparison website that helps people find the power deal that works best for them,” said Ms. Conboy.
