The AER is seeking further input into the development of its new approach to wholesale electricity market monitoring. The approach will guide the first comprehensive long-term monitoring report of the wholesale markets, and help inform advice to the COAG Energy Council on the effectiveness of competition and the efficient operation of the National Electricity Market.
We published a discussion paper in August and hosted a public forum in October to gather stakeholder’s views. Based on that feedback, we have now developed a draft statement of approach for consultation.
Today, the AER published three documents:
- An Update and consultation paper - This outlines our responses to stakeholder submissions on our discussion paper. It also explains the role of the two draft documents that set out our approach and invites stakeholder feedback on this approach.
- A draft Statement of Approach - The general approach we will take for our wholesale electricity market performance monitoring functions.
- A draft 2018 Focus - This identifies the areas we will focus on for the 2018 performance report and the tools and measures we will use.
How to get involved
We are now seeking stakeholder views on our draft Statement of approach and 2018 Focus.

We prefer that all submissions be publicly available to facilitate an informed and transparent consultative process. Submissions will be treated as public documents unless otherwise requested. Parties wishing to submit confidential information are requested to:
- clearly identify the information that is the subject of the confidentiality claim
- provide a non-confidential version of the submission in a form suitable for publication.
