On 29 March 2011, the Ministerial Council on Energy (MCE) directed the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) to undertake a further Review into Demand Side Participation (DSP) in the National Electricity Market. This Review is titled: Power of Choice - giving consumers options in the way they use electricity (formerly Stage 3 DSP Review).

The purpose of the Review was to identify market and regulatory arrangements that would enable the participation of both supply and demand side options in achieving an economically efficient demand/supply balance in the electricity market.

AER submission to AEMC directions paper - review of demand side participation in the NEM - Power of Choice review - 8 May 2012

Draft report

On 12 October 2012, we provided a submission to the AEMC on its draft report on the Power of Choice review of demand-side participation (DSP) in the National Electricity Market (NEM). The AER’s submission broadly supports the AEMC’s recommendations which aim to enable more interaction possibilities for either end of the electricity supply chain in an effort to create a more efficient balance of demand and supply in the NEM. While broadly supporting the recommendations, the submission makes a number of suggestions to ensure that DSP outcomes are as efficient as possible and deliver lowest cost outcomes to consumers.
