On 31 January 2014, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) approved an application from The Smarter Group, trading as Smart Commercial Solar, for an exemption from the requirement to hold a retailer authorisation under the National Energy Retail Law.
On 14 July 2014 the AER proposed to vary the conditions of The Smarter Group's exemption. Submissions on the variation closed 15 August 2014. No submissions were received. On 14 January 2015 the AER varied The Smarter Group's exemption to include a new condition.
