On 3 January 2020, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) received a rule change request from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) seeking to amend the National Electricity Rules (NER) to clarify the framework for transmission connections through a dedicated connection asset (DCA). AEMO raised a number of issues related to the application of key NER requirements where multiple facilities are connected by the same DCA.
On 26 November 2020, the AEMC made a more preferable draft rule that establishes a new regime for ‘designated network assets’. The draft rule establishes individual transmission network connection points for each party connecting to a DCA. This aims to promote more efficient investment in, and use of, the transmission system by facilitating better sharing of transmission assets by connecting parties.
The AER made a submission to the AEMC’s draft rule determination on 21 January 2021.
