Our role to protect customers

The AER has an important role in ensuring the continuity of energy supply to customers when an energy retailer chooses to surrender or transfer their retail authorisation or if it fails in the market.

The Retailer of Last Resort (RoLR) scheme is a consumer safeguard that transfers customers to another energy retailer if their current retailer exits the market.

The scheme ensures the customer has a continuous supply of gas or electricity with a nominated ‘retailer of last resort’.
