Workshop to explore options for encouraging efficient demand management in electricity

We invite people with an interest in demand management to come and discuss the issues associated with developing a new demand management incentive scheme and innovation allowance mechanism.

This engagement opportunity will be held in Sydney on 20 September 2016 as an interactive workshop. The workshop will be based on issues that you identify in advance.

We encourage participants to let us know their key issues in advance by registering for the workshop. This will provide you an opportunity to tell us what is important and allow us to better engage and understand the issues on the day.

The workshop will encourage participation by providing a platform for people to express their views on how to develop an outcome that is workable and possible. We will provide a transparent approach to capture a range of issues in keeping with our commitment to good stakeholder engagement.

The objective of the incentive scheme is to encourage electricity distribution businesses to undertake efficient expenditure on non-network options relating to demand management. The objective of the separate innovation allowance mechanism is to fund distribution businesses for research and development in demand management projects that have the potential to reduce long term network costs.

The new scheme and allowance mechanism will complement our ongoing work targeting efficient outcomes and more consumer choice, recognising the changes taking place in the electricity industry. This includes work on tariff reform, metering contestability, developing national ring fencing guidelines, and a rule change to strengthen the transparency and efficiency of replacement expenditure.
