The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) today released its final decision, “Victorian electricity distribution network service providers – Advanced Metering Infrastructure remote service charges”. This paper, and related material, is available on the AER's website.

The final decision relates to the charges proposed by CitiPower, Powercor, United Energy and Jemena Electricity Networks (JEN) for the provision of AMI remote services, these being:

  • Remote re-energisation (connection)
  • Remote de-energisation (disconnection)
  • Remote special meter reads
  • Remote meter reconfiguration

These services are only provided at a customer’s request. Currently these services are delivered to customers manually and require a technician to visit a customer’s property. Remote AMI services will become available to customers that have AMI meters (i.e. smart meters) installed and where a distribution service provider is in a position to provide remote services. Remote AMI services will remove the need for manual delivery of these services.
